Notes

The iPhone 6s looked almost identical to the iPhone 6 and cost the same, $199 on a two-year contract or $649 without one. Everything that changed was behind the glass. The display gained 3D Touch, which could sense how hard it was being pressed, and Apple used that for two gestures it called Peek and Pop. A light press showed a preview of a message or a link and a firmer press opened it properly. Pressing an app icon on the home screen brought up a short list of Quick Actions.

The case was made from 7000 series aluminium, which Apple said was the alloy used in the aerospace industry, and the company described the cover glass as the strongest on any smartphone. Inside was the A9 chip with the M9 motion coprocessor built into it rather than sitting alongside. A fourth finish arrived with this generation, rose gold, joining gold, silver and space grey.

The camera moved up to a 12-megapixel sensor and could record 4K video at 3840 by 2160. Live Photos captured a short moment of motion either side of a still image. The front camera went to 5 megapixels and gained Retina Flash, which briefly made the whole display three times brighter rather than firing a flash. Optical image stabilisation for video went only to the larger iPhone 6s Plus.

The iPhone 6s turned out to be one of the longest-supported phones Apple has made. It was still able to run iOS 15 when that was released in 2021, six years after it went on sale.

It was announced on 9 September 2015 at the 'Hey Siri, give us a hint' event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, went up for pre-order on 12 September and reached shops on 25 September, priced from $199 with a two-year contract.
