Notes

The iPhone 7 cost $649 and was the first iPhone sold without a headphone socket. Apple put EarPods with a Lightning connector in the box instead, along with an adapter so existing headphones would still work. The decision drew more comment than anything else about the phone, and Phil Schiller's line on stage about it taking courage was repeated for years afterwards.

Two other changes were less discussed and arguably mattered more. This was the first iPhone Apple rated for water and dust resistance, at IP67 under the IEC 60529 standard, though Apple noted the rating came from laboratory conditions and could fade with wear. The home button also stopped being a button. Apple fitted a pressure-sensitive pad and used the Taptic Engine to generate a click that felt mechanical but was not.

Inside was the A10 Fusion chip with a four-core processor. The iPhone 7 had stereo speakers for the first time, which Apple said were twice as loud as those on the iPhone 6s, and the display was brighter with a wider colour range. Storage started at 32GB rather than 16GB and went up to 256GB.

Apple sold it in silver, gold, rose gold and two blacks. One was a matte anodised black and the other was jet black, a high-gloss finish restricted to the 128GB and 256GB models. A red version followed in March 2017.

It was announced on 7 September 2016 at the 'See you on the 7th' event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, went up for pre-order on 9 September and reached shops on 16 September, priced from $649.
