Notes

The iPhone 8 started at $699 and kept the shape Apple had used since 2014, with a home button and a 4.7-inch screen. The change you could see was on the back. Apple swapped the aluminium for glass, which it had not used there since the iPhone 4s in 2011, so the phone could charge wirelessly on any Qi pad. The glass sat inside a colour-matched aluminium bezel, and Apple described it as the most durable glass ever used in a smartphone.

The display gained True Tone, which reads the light in the room and shifts the screen's white balance to match it, so the picture looks less blue under a warm lamp. Inside was the A11 Bionic chip, with six cores arranged as two fast ones and four efficient ones. The camera stayed at 12 megapixels but used a larger and faster sensor, and it could record 4K video at 60 frames a second and slow motion at 1080p and 240 frames a second.

The iPhone 8 kept the IP67 water and dust rating introduced on the iPhone 7, and the headphone socket stayed gone. Storage came in 64GB and 256GB at launch, and the finishes were space grey, silver and a new gold. A red version followed later.

It stayed on sale for longer than most, and when Apple finally discontinued it in April 2020 the same body reappeared the same day as the second generation iPhone SE.

It was announced on 12 September 2017 at the 'Let's meet at our place' event, the first held in the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park, went up for pre-order on 15 September and reached shops on 22 September, priced from $699.
