Notes

The iPhone 8 Plus cost $799 and was the larger of the two phones Apple introduced that September, with a 5.5-inch screen and two 12-megapixel cameras on the back. The cameras brought a feature the smaller model did not get. Portrait Lighting used both lenses and the new image processor to change the lighting on a face after the picture had been taken, and Apple shipped it as a beta, which it said openly in its own announcement.

Like the smaller phone, the iPhone 8 Plus had a glass back so it could charge wirelessly on a Qi pad, set in a colour-matched aluminium bezel. That glass is why the phone put on weight. It reached 202g and 7.5mm deep, against 188g and 7.3mm for the iPhone 7 Plus, with no change to the screen or the overall size.

The A11 Bionic chip ran both models, with two fast cores and four efficient ones. The display added True Tone, which adjusts the white balance to suit the light in the room. Video went to 4K at 60 frames a second, with slow motion at 1080p and 240 frames a second. The IP67 water and dust rating carried over from the iPhone 7 Plus.

Storage was 64GB or 256GB at launch and the finishes were space grey, silver and a new gold, with a red version following later. This was also the end of a naming convention, because Apple moved to the Max name for its large phones the following year.

It was announced on 12 September 2017 at the 'Let's meet at our place' event in the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park, went up for pre-order on 15 September and reached shops on 22 September, priced from $799.
