Notes

Apple charged $769 for the iPhone 7 Plus, and the reason to pay the extra over the smaller model was no longer just the screen. This was the first iPhone with two cameras on the back. One was the same 12-megapixel wide angle camera fitted to the iPhone 7, and beside it sat a 12-megapixel telephoto. Used together they gave two times optical zoom and up to ten times digital zoom.

The portrait effect that the phone became known for was not ready at launch. Apple's own announcement said the depth of field feature using both cameras was coming later in the year, and it arrived as a software update some weeks after the phone went on sale.

Everything else was shared with the smaller model. The 3.5mm headphone socket was gone, replaced by EarPods with a Lightning connector and an adapter in the box. The iPhone 7 Plus was rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, the first generation Apple had rated at all, and the home button was a pressure-sensitive pad rather than a moving switch. The A10 Fusion chip drove both phones.

Battery life was the other reason to choose the larger one, at up to 21 hours of talk time against 14 hours. The phone was also slightly lighter than the iPhone 6s Plus it replaced, at 188g rather than 192g, despite the second camera. Finishes were silver, gold, rose gold, matte black and the high-gloss jet black, which was sold only in the 128GB and 256GB sizes.

It was announced on 7 September 2016 at the 'See you on the 7th' event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, went up for pre-order on 9 September and reached shops on 16 September, priced from $769.
