Notes
The iPhone X cost $999 and was the first iPhone with no home button. The screen ran almost the full height of the phone, interrupted only by a notch at the top holding the cameras and sensors, and everything the home button used to do moved to gestures in iOS 11. Jony Ive said at the time that Apple had intended to build an iPhone that was all display for more than a decade.
Removing the button meant finding another way to unlock the phone, and Apple's answer was Face ID. A camera system it called TrueDepth projects more than 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto a face and reads the pattern they form. The same hardware tracks over 50 facial muscle movements, which is how Animoji followed the user's expression and made the phone's cartoon animals pull faces back.
This was also the first iPhone with an OLED screen, which Apple branded Super Retina. It measured 5.8 inches and ran at 2436 by 1125 pixels at 458 pixels per inch, sharper than anything Apple had shipped before. The front and back were glass, which Apple called the most durable ever used in a smartphone, and the band around the edge was polished surgical-grade stainless steel rather than aluminium. Wireless charging worked on any Qi pad and the phone carried the same IP67 water and dust rating as the iPhone 8.
The A11 Bionic chip was shared with the iPhone 8, with the addition of a neural engine for the face and image work, and Apple said the phone lasted two hours longer than the iPhone 7. The iPhone X came in silver and space grey only, in 64GB and 256GB.
Buyers had to wait for it. Apple showed the phone in September but did not put it on sale until November, by which point the iPhone 8 had already been in shops for six weeks.
It was announced on 12 September 2017 at the 'Let's meet at our place' event in the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park, went up for pre-order on 27 October and reached shops on 3 November, priced from $999.
