Notes

The iPhone XS cost $999 and was an update to the iPhone X rather than a replacement for the look of it. The body measured exactly the same, 143.6 by 70.9 by 7.7mm, and weighed 3g more at 177g. The 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED screen carried over unchanged at 2436 by 1125 pixels, as did the notch, Face ID and the stainless steel band.

What changed was inside. The A12 Bionic was the first 7 nanometre chip in any smartphone, a claim Apple made directly in its announcement, and it carried an eight core neural engine that handled the face and image work. The dual 12-megapixel camera gained Smart HDR, which pulls more detail out of highlights and shadows, and kept the two times optical zoom.

Apple also raised the water rating. The iPhone XS was rated IP68, good for two metres for thirty minutes, where the iPhone X had been IP67. Dual SIM arrived too, working through one physical nano-SIM alongside a digital eSIM, though not at launch. Apple shipped it as a free software update later that autumn.

The phone came in gold, space grey and silver, with gold new to this generation, and in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB. Apple said it lasted thirty minutes longer between charges than the iPhone X.

It was announced on 12 September 2018 at the 'Gather round' event in the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park, went up for pre-order on 14 September and reached shops on 21 September, priced from $999.
