Notes

The iPhone XR cost $749 and was the cheapest way into the design Apple had introduced the year before, with the notch, Face ID and no home button. Getting the price down meant choices, and they are visible once you know where to look. The band around the edge was aerospace-grade aluminium rather than stainless steel, there was one camera on the back instead of two, and the 6.1-inch Liquid Retina screen was an LCD, the only one of the three phones Apple announced that September without OLED. Apple called it the most advanced LCD in a smartphone, and it ran at 1792 by 828 pixels.

Two other things went. The water rating was IP67 rather than the IP68 of the XS pair, and 3D Touch was gone. The pressure-sensitive screen Apple had shipped since the iPhone 6s was replaced by Haptic Touch, which responds to a long press rather than a hard one, and Apple never went back to the pressure-sensitive version.

What the iPhone XR did not give up was the chip. The A12 Bionic was the same 7 nanometre processor fitted to the iPhone XS and XS Max, and the single camera used a new sensor behind an f/1.8 wide-angle lens. Battery life was better than either of its more expensive siblings on paper. Apple rated it at 25 hours of talk time and 16 hours of video playback, an hour and a half longer between charges than the iPhone 8 Plus.

It was sold in six finishes, white, black, blue, yellow, coral and red, against three for the iPhone XS, and in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.

It was announced on 12 September 2018 at the 'Gather round' event in the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park, went up for pre-order on 19 October and reached shops on 26 October, priced from $749.
