Notes

Apple charged $1,099 for the iPhone XS Max, and what the money bought was screen. At 6.5 inches it was the largest display Apple had put on an iPhone, running at 2688 by 1242 pixels, and the phone weighed 208g, more than any iPhone before it. This was also the first time Apple used the Max name, having retired Plus with the iPhone 8 Plus a year earlier.

Everything else was shared with the smaller model. The A12 Bionic chip was the first 7 nanometre processor in any smartphone, with an eight core neural engine, and the dual 12-megapixel camera gained Smart HDR for more detail in highlights and shadows. The iPhone XS Max carried the same IP68 water rating, good for two metres for thirty minutes, and the same stainless steel band and glass back.

Dual SIM worked through one physical nano-SIM plus a digital eSIM, and arrived in a free software update later that autumn rather than at launch.

The larger body did more for battery life than anything else. Apple rated it at 25 hours of talk time and said it lasted an hour and a half longer between charges than the iPhone X, where the iPhone XS managed thirty minutes more. Finishes were gold, space grey and silver, in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB, and the 512GB version at $1,449 was the most expensive iPhone Apple had sold.

It was announced on 12 September 2018 at the 'Gather round' event in the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park, went up for pre-order on 14 September and reached shops on 21 September, priced from $1,099.
